IBDP MATHEMATICS

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) Mathematics is designed to develop students' mathematical knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. It prepares students for higher education and real-world challenges, fostering a deeper appreciation for the beauty and power of mathematics.

Two Routes Available: Mathematics AA and Mathematics AI

The IBDP Mathematics curriculum offers two distinct routes to cater to different interests and strengths:

  1. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA): This route is ideal for students who enjoy exploring mathematical theories and concepts in depth. It focuses on algebra, calculus, and abstract mathematical thinking.

  2. Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI): This route is suitable for students who prefer practical applications of mathematics. It emphasizes statistics, modelling, and using technology to solve real-world problems.

The Four Types of Math Courses

Within each route, there are two levels of study, making a total of four IBDP Mathematics courses:

  1. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) – Higher Level (HL)

  2. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) – Standard Level (SL)

  3. Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) – Higher Level (HL)

  4. Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) – Standard Level (SL)

Difference between HL and SL

Both Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) courses cover core mathematical concepts, but there are key differences:

  • Depth and Breadth: HL courses cover topics in more depth and include additional content compared to SL courses.

  • Assessment: HL courses have more extensive assessments, including additional exams and more challenging questions.

  • Workload: HL courses require more class time and a greater commitment outside of class for homework and study.

  4. Statistics and Probability: Analyzing data and understanding probability theory.

  5. Geometry and Trigonometry: Investigating geometric properties and trigonometric functions.

Assessment Structure

The assessment for Mathematics AA includes:

  • Internal Assessment (IA): A mathematical exploration on a topic of the student's choice, accounting for 20% of the final grade.

  • External Assessment: This includes:

    • Paper 1: A non-calculator exam focused on core topics.

    • Paper 2: A calculator-allowed exam covering a broad range of topics.

    • Paper 3 (HL only): An in-depth problem-solving and mathematical modeling exam.

Career opportunities

Studying Mathematics AA can open doors to a variety of careers, including:

  • Engineering: Applying mathematical principles to design and build.

  • Physics: Exploring the fundamental laws of nature.
